Various BMW crankcase ventilation valves: No. 1, used in the M52/S52 engines; Nos. 2 and 3, used in the M73 (two valves per engine); No. 4, used in the M42 from 1/94 production and M44; and No. 5, used in the M60/M62. If a crankcase ventilation valve is defective (damaged diaphragm) the column of water will indicate an off the scale reading (all of the water on one side of the slack tube) which indicates a high crankcase vacuum.
